Small Businesses Can Reduce IT Carbon Footprint by 90% with Cloud Computing

Use of energy in massive data centres for cloud computing has been a big debatable issue ever since these data centres evolved and major cloud services vendors have been trying to figure out ways to reduce the carbon footprint of these large data storage facilities. However, a recent study by Microsoft suggests that enterprise clients can slash their IT carbon footprint by 30 to 90 percent by moving it to the cloud. (more…)

Two million old plastic bottles recycled into clothes labels

That’s the aim of M&S’s new push to recycle old plastic bottles as reported by Business Green adding “The British retailer confirmed today that 300 million garments annually will carry polyester care labels made from recycled PET1 drinks bottles instead of virgin polyester, a material made from oil-based polymers. M&S said it has not calculated how much energy or carbon dioxide the measure will save. The new labels will appear in stores from the start of next year.”

Let’s not forget other worthy initiatives from U.K. retailers such as:

  • Waitrose’s WildCare scheme which Green Wise says achieved an increase in Wildlife habitats that exceeded thee national average by 20 per cent.
  • The MITIE and Tesco store lighting initiative described by pfmonthenet.net where “MITIE has a strong track record of energy management projects most notably with Tesco where it has saved the retailer £1.1m, reduced its emissions, implemented planned lighting programme and improved utilisation of natural light.
