Ice Energy Uses Ice-based Energy Storage to Reduce Energy Costs in Air-Conditioning

We have seen many renewable or alternative energy sources being discovered but what one thing we must not forget is to think about how we can reduce the energy being consumed already. Air-conditioning of large buildings is one major area of energy consumption that needs to be looked at and some major companies are working on that like Yahoo’s chicken-coop inspired green data centre that uses 100pc outside air for cooling and Capegemini UK’s green data centre project.

A US-based start-up company, Ice Energy, builds an ice-based energy storage and air conditioning system for buildings. (more…)

The Solar Trap for Pest Control is Green

Pest control is a sensitive topic mainly because the toxicity of the chemicals that are typically used. However, this chemical-free solar powered solution can resolve the problem of pests and end the debate.

This green Solar Trap from South Korean company Eco Solatec “uses a BLB lamp to attract mosquitoes, moths, mayflies and other common pests, and then propel them by fan into an inescapable net.” (more…)

Hydrogen Powered Vans

Hybrid vehicles and electric vehicles have been around for a while now but the concept of hydrogen-powered automobiles is a relatively new concept. We’ve yet to see a commercially viable hydrogen-powered vehicle.

However, Scottish and Southern Electricity (SSE) has agreed to test hydrogen-fuelled vans in an attempt to decarbonising its fleet of vans which regularly travel the length and breadth of the country. (more…)

Solar Plane Can Fly Around The Earth For Five Years Without Landing

Boeing’s Solar Plane

Earlier in July, we saw a Swiss-built Solar Impulse completed the first ever 24-hour flight by a manned solar-powered aircraft, reaching a record-breaking height of 8,500m. Meanwhile, a month later UK engineering firm QinetiQ’s unmanned Zep hyr plane flew for 82 hours and 37 minutes above the US Army’s Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona.

Now, the aircraft manufacturing giant Boeing has confirmed that it is working on a space-age plane design that could keep flying for up to five years using only solar power. (more…)

Last week we told you about Yahoo’s chicken coop-inspired green data centre that uses 100 percent outside air for cooling. Well, Capgemini UK is boldly claiming to have created the most sustainable datacentre in the world in Swindon, where the climate is apparently optimal for the fresh-air cooling system it has implemented. Yahoo’s Chicken Coop-Inspired Green Data Centre Uses 100pc Outside Air for Cooling

Large Data Centres have traditionally been using large power-hungry chillers for air conditioning and are a cause of concern for the Green companies. Yahoo has taken an initiative towards reducing the energy cost of these large data centres by launching the first chicken coop-inspired data centre, which utilise outside air and can reduce cooling power and costs, in Lockport, New York.

The 155,000-square-foot data centre, which can accommodate 50,000 servers, is cooled almost 100 percent by outside air and uses 40 percent less energy than typical data centres. Yahoo’s Coop design attributes just 1 percent of its annual energy consumption to cooling. (more…)

Hybrid Wind Turbines Can Generate Power without Wind

A wind turbine / image source: ecogeek

A problem with normal wind turbines is that they can’t generate power or electricity when the wind is not blowing to a certain level, however, this could change with the introduction of a hybrid wind turbine that can run on natural gas or biogas when there is no or low wind.

According to Ecogeek, a US based company Hybrid Turbines Inc. is working on a system “SmartGen hybrid gas-wind turbine” that enables wind turbines to generate energy at “periods of low wind, by turning the turbine with compressed air generated at the base of the tower from a turbo-compressor that is run on natural gas or biogas.”

The most interesting thing is that (more…)

A Bicycle-powered Coffee Stand

We told you about a hand-powered espresso maker in a previous post. Verge Manuel at Springwise has spotted a bicycle-powered coffee stand that serves both hot and cold coffee on the streets of New York City. “Brooklyn-based Kickstand Coffee uses two bicycles, a fold-up stand and a hand-cranked grinder to serve up sustainable hot and cold coffee at events around the city,” reports Springwise.
