The Observer’s Green Power List is diverse, with names such as Jonathan Franzen (novelist), Michael Bloomberg (Mayor of New York), Evo Morales (politician) and even Arnie! With Canadian scientist David Suzuki – broadcaster, author and environmental activist – as number 1 on the list.
The list was announced to launch The Observer’s 2011 Ethical Awards, launched last week.

Use of energy in massive data centres for cloud computing has been a big debatable issue ever since these data centres evolved and major cloud services vendors have been trying to figure out ways to reduce the carbon footprint of these large data storage facilities. However, a recent study by Microsoft suggests that enterprise clients can slash their IT carbon footprint by 30 to 90 percent by moving it to the cloud. (more…)

Electronics Recycling Party at Punk Soho
Holding a recycling party is a great way to celebrate the fact that across Europe we have removed the equivalent of 3.5 million cars from the road for 1 year, simply by recycling our old electronics and fridges (etc) rather than sending them to landfill.
Just bring your old electronics to the party at Punk, Soho on 10th November and gain free entry to an evening of eclectic beats with guest DJs Rob Da Bank and Jackmaster plus Special Guest James Yuill. (more…)

Recycling old gadgets and electrical items not only saves the environment but also help you save and in many cases earn some money. However, surgical gadgets have not been traditionally considered to be recyclable and safe. Researchers at the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center are examining the legality and basic logistics of recycling pacemakers after they have been removed from a deceased person.
Pacemakers are used to correct a slow heart beat, which may be the result of a previous heart attack or old age. According to the researchers, one to two million people of the world die each year due to lack of access to pacemakers. Despite the very high demand and manufacturers reducing the cost, pacemakers still cost around US$800 (around £500), which is still more than the annual income of the average worker in underdeveloped countries. That’s the aim of M&S’s new push to recycle old plastic bottles as reported by Business Green adding “The British retailer confirmed today that 300 million garments annually will carry polyester care labels made from recycled PET1 drinks bottles instead of virgin polyester, a material made from oil-based polymers. M&S said it has not calculated how much energy or carbon dioxide the measure will save. The new labels will appear in stores from the start of next year.”
Let’s not forget other worthy initiatives from U.K. retailers such as:
- Waitrose’s WildCare scheme which Green Wise says achieved an increase in Wildlife habitats that exceeded thee national average by 20 per cent.
- The MITIE and Tesco store lighting initiative described by pfmonthenet.net where “MITIE has a strong track record of energy management projects most notably with Tesco where it has saved the retailer £1.1m, reduced its emissions, implemented planned lighting programme and improved utilisation of natural light. GreenTech recycling new website design 1
Click the picture to enlarge
We have a few new ideas and designs to improve our recycle printer cartridges website that we’ll be developing over the coming weeks. We hope to make the whole process faster and the website easier to use, so you can input all the cartridges you are recyling into the website faster.
Here’s the first of the pages we have started to design. We’ll be posting updates over the coming week hoping for our customers feedback. If you have any ideas/comments/feedback then we’d love to hear from you. Simply send me an email to paul (at) gtrecycling.com and I’ll be very grateful.
The website redesign project will take a few weeks to complete but we are hoping to have all the feedback from current recycling customers by the end of October. So if you have any ideas then please do email me. Thanks.
Paul.

We have seen many renewable or alternative energy sources being discovered but what one thing we must not forget is to think about how we can reduce the energy being consumed already. Air-conditioning of large buildings is one major area of energy consumption that needs to be looked at and some major companies are working on that like Yahoo’s chicken-coop inspired green data centre that uses 100pc outside air for cooling and Capegemini UK’s green data centre project.
A US-based start-up company, Ice Energy, builds an ice-based energy storage and air conditioning system for buildings. (more…)

Business Green reports that “The Sustainable Cities Index from think tank Forum for the Future put Newcastle ahead of Leicester, Brighton, Bristol and London based on its performance against 13 indicators covering areas such as environmental impact, quality of life and future-proofing.”
GreenTech’s home town of Peterborough is not listed since this review only includes the U.K.’s largest cities. However neighbouring Leicester, even trumped Newcastle (more…)
